EuroMillions Lotto

EuroMillions is a rather unique lotto draw in that it is played in not one, but nine European countries. The game was launched in February 2004 in just three countries (Spain, France and the United Kingdom), but then Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland joined the EuroMillions family in October 2004. All players in all participating nations play for the same huge jackpot fund, and this gives the game a very real 'international community' feel that simply can't be found in any other lottery.

To play the EuroMillions lotto, you need to select five main numbers from 1 to 50 and two additional numbers (known as Lucky Stars) from 1 to 11. If you don't want to choose your own numbers then you can take advantage of a 'Lucky Dip' option and have your numbers picked at random. Either way, your chance of winning any prize is exactly the same.

The EuroMillions draw takes place every Tuesday and Friday. Jackpots are never worth less than €15 million, and if nobody wins the jackpot it rolls over to the next draw. This feature can generate some truly colossal jackpots - the biggest on record was worth €183 million - making EuroMillions one of the most generous lotteries in the world. However the jackpot prize pool is capped at €185,000,000 which means that should it reach this level it stops there until it has been won. Any subsequent multiple rollovers that reach the cap will see it increase by €5 million so for the second time that the cap is reach the jackpot will cap at €190 million until it is won, the third instance will see the cap at €195 million as so on. Each draw after the 'Jackpot Pool Cap' has been reached will see the prize fund from ticket sales exceeding the cap fall to the second lowest tier winners, should none be found, it will then fall to the third tier winners and so on and so forth. This will continue until a winner of the capped jackpot is found at which point the Euromillions jackpot will reset to €15 million.

Euromillions Prizes

To win the jackpot, players need to match all five main numbers and both Lucky Star numbers. However, there are twelve other prize levels, so even if you miss out on the jackpot you could still win a cash prize. The prize levels and odds of winning each are shown in the table below:

If you purchase a EuroMillions ticket from a traditional offline retailer then it is important to note that you must make any claim for a prize in the same country in which you bought the ticket. For example, if you buy a ticket in France whilst on holiday, you would need to claim any prize that ticket won in France. Fortunately, this potentially problematic rule can easily be overcome by buying EuroMillions tickets online.
